I go for many KTV sessions. When I first started singing karaoke, I was limited by my poor command of mandarin to a few songs by David Tao and Alex To. As time went by, I exposed myself to more songs, from Lin Junjie to Wu Bai. Exotic songs like One Night In Beijing to bring laughter. In fact, XL remarked that my mandarin had made marked improvements ever since I started singing with him. But of all the songs I've learnt to sing, one particular one stands out, never fails to touch and inspire me whenever I sing it, and I would invariably end up standing on the sofa towards the end of this song, belting out the refrain. Singing this song would mean I wouldn't have the voice to continue with any other song for at least half an hour afterwards, and often indicated GAME OVER for the rest of the session for me. Because of what this song means to me, I sing it with all my heart and soul.
The lyrics go like this:
XL introduced this song to me at the point in time where my woes started pouring in one by one, and served to remind me that my true friends and brothers were rallying around me, lending me support, lifting me up high and reinforcing me. Reminding me that, while all else looked bleak, I still have my friends. And with this group of brothers around me, nothing is insurmountable, nothing can conquer us.
And as I sing that song, for those few minutes, I feel invincible. Wrapped up in the care and concern, the regard my friends, my buddies have towards me, an awareness of all the things my friends feel and do for my sake that, until that song started playing, didn't seem so acute.
And because, everytime I sing that song, I do so in tribute for those who have locked their shoulders with me, hunkered down, and took the bullets as they came together. I don't have to mention any names at all. You know who you are, each and every one of you. It is for you my hair stands as my inner being surges with emotion each time I listen to or sing this song. You are the reason this song means what it does to me. And hence, it is for you, my bosom friends, my surest buddies, my truest brothers-in-arms.
Riding hard, fast, safely AND taking a few corners.
